Showrunner and Director Abbey LeVine has an uncanny ability to relate to people of all walks of life. She believes everyone wants to have a voice and be seen. Making art out of these moments is her passion and commitment. Working on gritty, darker material is just as important as the fluffy entertainment that audiences respond to on cable and network television.
Abbey’s work in non-fiction programming for the last 16 years includes: interviews inside prisons with cold-blooded murderers, showcasing the dynamics inside the favelas with the children of Brazil, walking red carpets with A-list celebrities, and spending six months in an artist’s residency in NYC with a woman whose deep commitment is to spread pleasure all over the world, helping women ignite their lives.
For “The Governor’s Wife” premiering on A&E in summer of 2013, Abbey moved to Louisiana and spent 6 days a week with the four time elected Governor Edwin Edwards after he was released from prison, following his new life with a 34-year old pregnant wife and their four kids from other marriages.
On “My Life is A Lifetime Movie” for Lifetime, she got to incorporate cheeky narrative and film scene interpretations into real life stories of women surviving tragedy. For “Beyond Scared Straight” on A&E, Abbey visited seven maximum security prisons with juveniles who are on the brink of landing inside the tortured walls and learned that its possible to see the good in everyone. She also crafted a fashion series for Lifetime with the Editor in Chief of Marie-Claire magazine and recently wrapped a music documentary on Lady Gaga, directing the biggest icon of our time for a week during her international concert tour.
Through it all, Abbey considers herself a portal through which life’s most incredible stories can be told. She is dedicated as much to the experience of the production as she is a refined, stylish and layered program.
She is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the International Documentary Association and is active in the Non-Fiction division of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been nominated for an Emmy and Prism Award.
Abbey has recently started to DJ in NYC – much to the delight of several dance floors in the city!
